World Mental Health Day (10th October)
was founded by the World Federation for Mental Health (More on
http://www.wfmh.org).
It is an opportunity to highlight the issues of mental health in the
workplace and create strategies to improve the wellbeing of all
employees. Led and supported by employers, the MINDFUL EMPLOYER®
initiative is aimed at increasing awareness of mental health at work and
providing support for businesses in recruiting and retaining staff.
Stress, depression and anxiety are estimated to be the cause of more
working days lost than any other work-related illness. This leads to:
-
Reduced profits.
-
Increased hours and workload for employees who cover for sick
colleagues (causing more pressure!)
-
Loss
of valued and talented people costs more than money.
With the right support, people with mental health issues can, and do
stay in work. With the right support from Mindful Employer®,
you can continue to run your business successfully.

In the news from Mindful Employer®
...
-
Workplace stress is slipping under the management radar in the UK,
with 71% of employees unable to raise their concerns with line
management, new research reveals. Research from Badenoch & Clark
shows 91% of staff report stress, but of those who brought the
issues up with their manager 7% said they were ignored, and a mere
7% saw concrete measures taken to improve their situation.
-
Employers are spending, on average, 9% more on healthcare this year
but despite increased costs remain committed to employee wellbeing.
-
According to AON Consulting, 29% of employers are planning to
redesign their package this year.
-
The
most popular new health benefits employers are considering are
dental care (39%), health screening (37%), employee assistance plans
(26%), occupational health (16%) and health cash plans (16%).
-
People with mental health problems are to get extra support to
remain at work, according to Jim Knight, minister of state for
employment reform.
-
The
Government is to extend its support for people with mental health
problems, following a 90% success rate in its pilot scheme.
-
New
measures will include a strategy document for mental health in
employment, which will be published this autumn. This will outline
what is expected of employers, healthcare professionals and
individuals in how to improve wellbeing at work.

without conscience' leadership cultures that we have been used to of
late. |

place to go with family and friends alike. I wouldn't miss it for the world and
this year I get to deliver a programme too, which is a real privilege."
New book on the way!

The book, written by Lynne Copp and supported by others, will look at both
the physical as well as emotional workplace. It will draw on case studies from
large and small organisations

New Government Report
A UK government report has recommended that the number of women in top roles
in public life could be boosted by the use of role models, positive action, more
flexible working and better networking.
The Conservative Party in the UK delivered a report last year that
highlighted a number of issues facing women in the UK. Out side of government,
the London Business School under the leadership of Lynda Grattan has also
delivered extensive research into women in business and leadership.
Currently, if nothing were done and we allowed evolution instead of
revolution, it will take at least 96 years for women to be equal in numbers to
men at the top in the Private Sector and over 200 years in the Public.
Therefore, I think this research is timely, but believe that it is now time for
action from organisations in both sectors. The reasons that women do not reach
the top of an organisation is complex and the solutions must therefore be many
and varied. All of these reports can be downloaded below, but I suggest that it
is time that we looked at work differently - work is something that we do, not
somewhere that we go. The genders may view this differently and therefore this
may create one of the reasons why women find it difficult to develop a senior
career whilst maintaining a balance
between work and life.
Below are my top ten actions that could be taken by organisations to begin to
change the gender and ethnic mix within their senior teams:
1. More flexibility - not just flexible working!
2. Improved inclusion - we work in a global and multicultural environment
make your an organisation that celebrates diversity and makes a world of
difference!
3. New leadership practices - have you booked a keynote presentation yet? Our
research and focus on the future of work will stimulate inspiration!
4. New learning and development approaches - how are you investing in
development and does your promotion, career development and training practices
exclude women? Look within the system, not just the curriculum!
5. Improved networking - mentoring and reverse mentoring! Role models may be
a good idea, but they are sometimes difficult to identify. Are you exploring
external mentors and global mentoring?
6. Generational understanding - do you understand the differences? Do you
understand the discriminations?
7. Gender understanding - this is not just general, but subtle differences,
how are you creating dialogue?
8. New performance measures and career development approaches - what gets
measured gets done
9. Increased talent management - HR, wake up!
10. Improved working environments - space, emotion, recognition and wellbeing.
Productivity is impacted by the environment in which people are expected to
perform. This includes all aspects of work environment.
I urge you to take action now. For more information on our mentoring,
coaching and training for women in leadership and management, please call +44
